Ronaldo,
I own Fronia E. Wissman's "Bouguereau," Pomegranate, 1st ed. 1996. You can find the paperback edition on Amazon for as low as $15--it's well worth that price. The reproductions are pretty good, and the text is informative too. It may not be the definitive Bouguereau monograph (I'm not sure what is) but it's good. You'd probably have to get into some scholarly journals to find out details about the painter's life and methods. Good luck!

Thanks for your comment Tim! I don't think Berger writes about the social class comparison. Your observation adds to my experience of the painting--and I especially like the parallel with the Arachne myth.

I love this painting. I don't know if Berger goes on to note this, but in the overall context of Velazquez's subtly subversive practice of portraying the culturally marginal with surprising dignity this piece practically yells.
Who is foregrounded here? Who is marginalized (visually)?
In the foreground we have workers, weavers who make the tapestries such as the one being admired in the distance. The models for these subjects are apparently those who labor invisibly in the service of the wealthy and royalty. Here they are not only made visible, but they take on a status that, relative to the marginally represented royalty in the distance, mirror's the audacity of mortal Arachne's comparison with the goddess Pallas.

[...] Of this picture one critic said: “Sink and Mirror is a combination of two paintings: the sink at bottom, the shelf with the mirror at top. Since the bathroom is narrow, the artist had to place himself very close to the subject, causing visual distortion of the vertical lines delineating the tiles. Rather than correct this, he has created a middle area, a sort of neutral band, in which the lines of the preliminary sketch are left visible as a record of process.” [...]

Dear Anne,

Wonderful to hear that you own a copy of this painting. Unfortunately, I know nothing about the value of such things. I suppose if it is a copy made by another important artist, it might have extra value. It is great just to hear of a quality handmade copy, since the practice of making copies to learn from the original artist has much gone out of style. But I don't know what the baseline value is, and I don't know whether an auction or online would be best. I'd guess that the auction would be more reliable, but the online idea might by chance make a big score.

Good Luck!
